Mistake #1 is treating your garbage disposal like it’s a trash compactor. Not all garbage belongs in it, despite its name. Yet some homeowners cram all kinds of waste down there until the blades literally stop turning. Pumpkin carvings, watermelon rinds and potato peels are common items that an emergency plumber has to remove to free up the blades.
Mistake #2: Forgetting To Remove the Garbage Disposal Plug
Another common error with garbage disposals occurs with the installation. While the install is pretty straightforward, if you want to connect the unit to a dishwasher, you first have to remove the knockout plug in the disposal. There’s no issue if there’s no dishwasher because the plug creates a seal. However, if there is a dishwasher and you don’t remove the plug, it will block the hole where the hose for the dishwasher connects, and water will leak everywhere. Time to call the emergency plumber!
Mistake #3: Placing Too Much Weight on Plumbing Fixtures
This means not using the bathtub spout as a footrest or hanging heavy racks from the showerhead. They are not made to carry weight on them. The showerhead will snap right off, and then you’ve got major septic problems and you’ll need an emergency plumber.
