What is a Septic Tank?
A septic tank is a sewage disposal system that consists of the tank, pipes leading into and out of it, a filtering system that must be cleared regularly and a leech field. The leech field is where the water eventually goes, after solid matter has been strained from it. Chemicals in the system break down the solid matter, but the holding area of the tank still needs regular pumping to clean it all out.
Mistake One: Putting the Wrong Stuff In
The most common error that leads to septic tank repairs is putting the wrong stuff in. A lot of people forget after awhile that anything that goes down the drain goes into the septic tank, not just what gets flushed in the toilet. Cooking oil, grease and caustic chemicals can cause clogs or damage the pipes or even the interior of the tank itself, leading to leaks later on.
Even if you are cautious about what goes down the drains, you need to think about what gets flushed through the toilet as well. Not everything on the market is biodegradable and over time, plastic applicators, feminine napkins and even some toilet paper products will collect in a sufficient mass to clog up the septic system and cause it to back up.
Mistake Two: Leaks and Cracks
This is one that most homeowners cannot prevent or foresee. Cracks in the septic tank, the filtering area and even the pipes can occur for a variety of reasons. Septic tanks are usually fully inspected before they get installed, as are the pipes but things can happen after installation. Extreme temperatures can freeze the ground around the tank and pipes or an accident involving something heavy running over the area where the tank is buried. Even the tiniest crack can eventually lead to problems later on.
The Importance of Maintenance
Having your septic system regularly maintained, by pumping it out on a regular basis and maintenance inspections can help to prevent septic tank repairs later on. Simply ask Liberty Plumbing and Septic about a maintenance package when you get the installation done.
